Here’s a current Raspberry Pi Zero Operating System list. Since Raspberry Pi Zero is the lowest-power Raspberry Pi, we only include the OSes that run on RPi Zero. Therefore, we do not include all of the Raspberry Pi Zero OSes in this list (since some OSes only run on Raspberry Pi 2 or 3, for example).
Parrot Security uses a the Mate Desktop environment which is a nice change of pace. This is a Debian-based distribution similar in look and feel to Kali Linux because the crew at Frozen Network started with the Kali git repository. Over to Kali Linux It has more than 300 pentesting tools.
Why? Because there are simply too many “clones” of one operating system. So, to keep it interesting we only show you the “unique” operating systems. Or we at least won’t show you duplicates ;). Without further time wasting, here’s the list:

Raspberry Pi Zero Operating System List:
While there are many operating systems available for Raspberry Pi 2 and 3, there are almost as many for Raspberry Pi Zero. The OSes that run on Pi Zero also run on Raspberry Pi 1, by the way.
Here is the Raspberry Pi Zero Operating system list with download links and install instructions for each:
1. Raspbian Jessie
Raspberry Pi’s Debian Jessie is a version of Linux that now rocks, due to being finely-tuned over the years. This is the “default operating system” for Raspberry Pi’s across the globe.
- Download Raspbian Jessiehere
- Install Raspbian Jessie or Wheezy easily with BerryBoot or NOOBs, or use the official install guide located here
- Alternatively you can download a .img file of Raspbian here to import into Berry Boot instead of installing it with the default menu (which is the easiest way!)
2. Kodi (aka OpenElec or OSMC)
Kodi is the favorite media center app for millions of people. It’s conveniently available as its own entire OS (a bonus for this Raspberry Pi Zero operating system list)!
- Check out the official OpenELEChomepage for install details
- Easily install Kodi by first copying BerryBoot to a clean Micro SD card. After that, put the card in your Pi and select OpenELEC > Install!
- Or download a Kodi .img file to use with Berry Boot hereHere’s what Kodi looks like on Raspberry Pi (OpenELEC)
3. RetroPie
Play classic games of all kinds using Retro Pie. Raspberry Pi Zero handles everything up to N64 (but not including Nintendo 64). So enjoy plenty of SNES games on your RPi Zero.
- Here’s the official RetroPiewebsite and their downloads page is here
- Download RetroPie .img file (download here) for Raspberry Pi Berry Boot here
- Install RetroPie by simply putting BerryBoot on a Micro SD card. Then use BerryBoot to install RetroPie in just a few minutes!
4. Kali Linux
This is the classic network penetration testing (pentesting) and security toolset version of Linux. Kali Linux is our favorite hacking OS in the Raspberry Pi Zero operating system list.
- Kali Linux needs to be installed using a .img file. Download a Kali Pi image file here.
- Use BerryBoot to Import the image file and install it to your Raspberry Pi’s Micro SD card
5. MusicBox
As the name suggests, PiMusicBox is an online streaming music service-connector that plays tracks from your online music services.
- Install MusicBox for Raspberry Pi by installing BerryBoot
- Download the Music Box image file here
6. MotionEyeOS
This is simply a surveillance camera / home security monitoring system.
Google trackers are lurking on 75% of websites. Cover your tracks to protect yourself.
- Install MotionEye OS by importing the .img file (here) into BerryBoot
- Make sure your Raspberry Pi is plugged directly into your router with an Ethernet cable. Otherwise, the MusicBox won’t start! Or use the official MusicBox install instructions to pre-configure your WiFi username and password and write it to the Micro SD card while you’re preparing the .img file.MotionEye OS Web Interface
7. RuneAudio
Rune Audio is another streaming music connector for your Raspbery Pi 0. While Rune Audio seems like just another jukebox for Raspberry Pi, it may give us some added functions not available in other OSes.
- Rune Audio is yet another audio system you install with BerryBoot by importing the image file
- Download Rune Audio img file here
8. ArchLinux
ArchLinux is just another flavor of Linux that works well on RPi zero. So, check it out as an alternative to Raspbian!
- Arch Linux is easily installed using Berry Boot for Raspberry Pi
- Download Ach Linux .img file here
9. PuppyLinux
Puppy is one of the oldest and smallest distributions of Linux.
10. PwnPi
This is basically a slimmed-down version of Kali Linux, which is used for security, hacking, and network penetration testing.
11. Open Media Vault
Open media vault allows you to set up your Raspberry Pi as a NAS device (network attached storage). It basically creates your own personal cloud.
Notice: Hackers create fake WiFi hotspots to steal your passwords when you log in to Starbucks WiFi. Secure your data.

This tutorial shows you step-by-step how to install Kodi Raspberry Pi Zero, 1, 2, and 3.
The easiest way to install Raspberry Pi Kodi version is to use BerryBoot. BerryBoot is a “boot-manager” or “boot loader” for Raspberry Pi – and it’s the better of at least two boot managers which currently exist.
- Quick Link: Download BerryBoot Images here (SourceForge) or here (Alex Goldcheidt) for free
Why do we prefer BerryBoot over NOOBS?
This is what the BerryBoot screen looks like
We prefer BerryBoot over NOOBS to install Kodi Raspberry Pi Zero because Berry Boot allows us to install multiple OSes on 1 card. The other Raspberry Pi “bootloader” (other than BerryBoot) is called NOOBS. NOOBS is great for installing one operating system.

But BerryBoot allows us to install several operating systems on one memory card, which (in our opinion) is better than the NOOBS limit of 1 OS per memory card. However – if you want to dedicate one memory card to one operating system (Kali Linux, for example), then do that easily with NOOBS!
- Note: OpenELEC currently installs Kodi 16 Jarvis for Raspberry Pi Zero. For Kodi 17 Krypton, try OSMC or LibreELEC!

Kodi Raspberry Pi Zero Install
- Download BerryBoot zip file from Github (the BerryBoot / Kodi Raspberry Pi Zero download is free!)
- Copy the contents of the berryboot-20161118-pi0-pi1-pi2-pi3.zip file and paste them all onto a clean Micro SD card.
- Safely eject the Micro SD memory card from your computer
- Put the Micro SD card in your Raspberry Pi
- Plug in the power to your Raspberry Pi Zero, 1, 2, or 3
- Wait for BerryBoot to boot up
- Using the BerryBoot operating system menu, select “OpenElec“. Don’t worry! OpenELEC is the operating system that auto-runs Kodi for us on Raspberry Pi zero, 1, 2, and 3.
- Now click Install
- Wait for BerryBoot to download and install OpenELEC, which is a “version” of Kodi.
- After OpenELEC installs, reboot your Raspberry Pi.
- Now boot up into OpenELEC, which you can do by simply letting BerryBoot do its “startup thing”.
- After Kodi is all booted up, install TV Addons using Indigo > Config Wizard!
Kodi Raspberry Pi Video Tutorial
Here’s my video tutorial on how to Install Kodi on Raspberry Pi 0. It’s actually for Raspberry Pi 3 – but the process is the same for all Raspberry Pi’s as long as you download the latest version of NOOBS from the official RPi download website.
Does Kodi Work on Raspberry Pi (Zero)?
Yes – Kodi runs very well on Raspberry Pi Zero using OpenELEC! I was pleasantly surprised to see actually how well “OpenELEC” version of Kodi works on my Raspberry Pi Zero Wireless. I was watching movies with Exodus in minutes.
Kodi works extremely well on my Raspberry Pi zero, which is pretty much the weakest computer in the RPi Family. Since Kodi Raspberry Pi Zero works very well, it’s safe to assume that Kodi Raspberry Pi 3, 2, and 1 work even better. Additionally, I owned a Raspberry Pi 2 a few years ago and I confirm that Kodi worked well on it at the time.
Kodi Music on Raspberry Pi Zero
I was also able to easily listen to a Podcast in the Music section of Kodi (Apple iTunes Podcasts).
Don’t forget that Kodi is just as excellent at playing music as it is for playing streaming movies & TV show episodes! Check out Kodi’s Radio app, Apple iTunes Podcasts, and even SoundCloud addons (aka plugins). These are all automatically installed using the Config Wizard, which is now found in the Indigo Wizard.
How do I install Indigo Wizard?
Install Indigo Wizard by following our video tutorial on how to install TVAddons.
